Abstract

The phrase "abolition of sin" has surfaced in modern Indonesian Christian discourse subsequent to President Prabowo Subianto's conferment of abolition to Tom Lembong in a sugar import case. This study deconstructs the semantic meaning of abolition and examines its compatibility with Christian redemption doctrine. The study uses qualitative research and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to look at the meanings of key terms related to redemption and to critique them within Christian teachings about salvation. The findings show that "abolition" means the removal of legal systems by an outside authority and is mainly about rules and administration. This semantic field is fundamentally incompatible with the biblical concept of sin as an existential-relational reality and contradicts the doctrine of redemption, which emphasizes reconciliation, ransom payment, and status renewal. The appropriation of this terminology poses serious pastoral implications: spiritual passivity, reinforcement of nominalism, and neglect of spiritual disciplines. Therefore, the term "abolition of sin" lacks theological validity. This study recommends using biblical terminology such as "redemption of sin" (apolutr?sis), "forgiveness of sin" (aphesis), or "reconciliation" (katallag?) to maintain theological integrity and evangelical clarity.
